Don F. Harris has represented clients in numerous complex cases involving business and financial matters. His trial and courtroom skills are formidable. Don specializes in Bankruptcy Law and collaborative divorce and is the only Nationally Certified attorney in New Mexico for both consumer and business bankruptcy, certified by the American Board of Certification. Don has experience as a former Assistant Attorney General for the State of New Mexico and a former Assistant Attorney for the City of Albuquerque.
After graduating cum laude from the University of Connecticut Law School and scoring in the top one percent on the national bar exam, Don clerked for the chief judge in one of the busiest bankruptcy courts in the country. He went on to found and become the first president of the States’ Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys (SABA), a national association of state and local government legal professionals who coordinate and cooperate in bankruptcy matters on a national level.
Don was the lead attorney representing 31 states in the US Supreme Court case of Raleigh v. Illinois. He prevailed both in getting the Supreme Court to hear the case and to unanimously rule in favor of the position he advocated on behalf of the many states. His understanding of the technically detailed nuances of the law led to his ability to persuade at such a high level.
He was also invited to testify before Congress in the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee on March 18, 1999, regarding proposed changes to the bankruptcy code at that time. Don was selected to participate in the proceedings before the National Bankruptcy Review Commission that Congress created to recommend changes to the bankruptcy code.
In New Mexico, Don is a current member and past chair of the Bankruptcy Section of the New Mexico State Bar. He is also a member of the Family Law Section, and was formerly on the board of the directors for that section. He has been honored by the New Mexico State Bar three times with appointments to serve on the Judicial Selection Committee. He has also been selected by the New Mexico bankruptcy judges to serve on a local rules committee.
Don has authored several articles in national journals and for educational seminars for other lawyers and legal professionals. He is highly respected in the legal community, both nationally and locally. He brings to the table experience, dedication, and a wealth of knowledge about law and the community.
